Placement rules for a bedroom
- Slide the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed (about 18" under the frame).
- Aim for 18–24" of rug visible on both sides and the foot of the bed.
- Queen → 8x10, King → 9x12 are the standard pairings; size up before you size down.
Most common mistake: A rug that only pokes out at the foot of the bed. You want it framing both sides where your feet land.
Are all rugs standard sizes?
Mostly. About nine standard sizes cover the market — 3x5, 4x6, 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, 12x15 ft plus round 4–10 ft — and 5x8, 8x10 and 9x12 account for most of what is sold. That is why this planner recommends the nearest size you can actually buy.
- Brand sizes vary slightly. One maker's “8x10” might be 7'10"x9'10" and another's exactly 96"x120" — always check the listed dimensions.
- Custom is an option. Rugs can be cut to any size for more money and a longer lead time. Use the Exact need (custom) figure from the calculator for a made-to-order rug.
- Caught between two sizes? Size up. An undersized rug is the most common mistake.
How sizes are computed & sources
- We snap your entered room/furniture dimensions to the nearest standard rug size using published placement rules (wall border, table overhang, bed overhang).
- Numbers are interior-design guidelines, not exact science — the diagram shows the actual border/overhang so you can adjust. Measure your space and tape it out before buying.
