Recommendations snap your measurements to a standard rug size under the placement rules below. Furniture, not room size, decides the rug — when in doubt, size up.
An L-shaped sectional eats a lot of floor: size up so the front of the whole sectional (both legs of the chaise) sits on the rug. Most sectionals want a 9x12 or 10x14.
Placement rules for a sectional
- Leave about 18" of bare floor between the rug and the walls (8–24" is the workable range; go smaller in tight rooms).
- At minimum the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug; all legs on looks the most polished.
- The rug should run about 6–8" wider than the sofa on each side.
Most common mistake: Buying too small. A 5x8 floating in front of the sofa makes a room look unfinished — most living rooms want 8x10 or 9x12.
Are all rugs standard sizes?
Mostly. About nine standard sizes cover the market — 3x5, 4x6, 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x14, 12x15 ft plus round 4–10 ft — and 5x8, 8x10 and 9x12 account for most of what is sold. That is why this planner recommends the nearest size you can actually buy.
- Brand sizes vary slightly. One maker's “8x10” might be 7'10"x9'10" and another's exactly 96"x120" — always check the listed dimensions.
- Custom is an option. Rugs can be cut to any size for more money and a longer lead time. Use the Exact need (custom) figure from the calculator for a made-to-order rug.
- Caught between two sizes? Size up. An undersized rug is the most common mistake.
How sizes are computed & sources
- We snap your entered room/furniture dimensions to the nearest standard rug size using published placement rules (wall border, table overhang, bed overhang).
- Numbers are interior-design guidelines, not exact science — the diagram shows the actual border/overhang so you can adjust. Measure your space and tape it out before buying.
